This New Indie Theater In Greenpoint Is Hosting An “Ocktober” Film Festival

Stuart Cinema & Cafe opened at 79 West Street this September. This week, they will be hosting their first “Ocktober Film Festival.”

Are you a movie lover? Looking for a new indie or alternative theater? Stuart Cinema and Cafe might be the place to be. The space is a cinema and area for events, as well as a quaint lounge and cafe with wifi access. This month to start things off, Stuart’s will be holding an Ocktober Film Fest from October 4-7.

Owner Emelyn Stuart has been organizing and running the Ocktober Film Festival since 2013 but this is the first year that it will be held in her very own theater. The idea is that the festival will serve as a platform for artists to express themselves through film and new medias. Stuart is heavily involved with the independent film making community and over the years, the festival has become a trusted resource for emerging and established filmmakers. Tickets are still available for the event and you can take a look at the movie lineup before hand.

Throughout the year, the focus at Stuart’s will be indie film, but mainstream feature films also screen regularly, with lower prices than bigger theaters: $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, $6 for children, and $3 for popcorn. Family-friendly films will also make an appearance. Stuart, who is a mother herself, has “made this a priority, noting it can be hard to find entertainment that’s both suitable for kids and financially accessible for lower-income families.”

And in case you’re curious, the beautiful mural painted outside the building was created by Fin Dac, a self-taught, non-conformist urban artist. The woman in the mural is well known Brazilian model, Paula Almeida.
